The discourse community of the biology department at Virginia Military Institue was by far the most difficult essay I have ever written. In the beginning, I did not even understand what a discourse community was and the importance of Swales viewpoints on it. It was not until I hit a wall of frustration in the process of rough drafting that I went up to Alex Galin and asked for help. He explained the definition of a discourse community in an easier way and broke down Swales viewpoints very well. In all, I came up the definition of a discourse community is a group of people, consisting of novices and experts, working towards a common goal that communicates in mass amounts of ways to achieve that goal.
