The image of the artifact I wrote about functions as a rhetoric of display because rhetoric is more than just words. Rhetoric can be defined as soothing sounds, as well as beautiful images. The artifact I chose was a picture of a vase. The vase depicted two nymphs playing instruments for Apollo. The detail was simple, yet elegant and stood out to me while I was browsing through many different photos. This beautiful image caught my eye and that is why it is considered rhetoric of display or the art of display. The image on the vase is a simple spectacle because the nymphs are performing for only Apollo and no one else. However, one might draw from the scene depicted on the vase that there might be a slight competition occurring. Why? because one woman sits before Apollo display that they are not equals; however the other woman stands strong before the god potentially creating a competition between the two.
