9/26 Natural Talent
Montana White Help Received: Isocrates Excerpt MC white
September 25, 2017
When referring to natural talent, Isocrates mentions that the ability to present speeches or any other kind of activity is because of nature. I believe that natural talent was an important consideration during this time period because if you were not born with the ability to speak before large groups of people and use rhetoric, it would be difficult to teach that to another person, it would also be very expensive to pay for classes in this area as well. Some people, no matter how much they are instructed to do something does not make them good at public speaking. They believed that many people were born with those talents and could further expand upon them with further instruction. In today’s rhetoric and context, one could say that politicians have a natural talent. You don’t normally see shy or introverted people becoming politicians. These people are born or surrounded by an environment which allows them to express themselves freely when referring to speech. They can later expand upon their natural talent in school in order to get themselves where they would like to be in the world of politics.

The image of the artifact I wrote about functions as a rhetoric of display because rhetoric is more than just words. Rhetoric can be defined as soothing sounds, as well as beautiful images. The artifact I chose was a picture of a vase. The vase depicted two nymphs playing instruments for Apollo. The detail was simple, yet elegant and stood out to me while I was browsing through many different photos. This beautiful image caught my eye and that is why it is considered rhetoric of display or the art of display. The image on the vase is a simple spectacle because the nymphs are performing for only Apollo and no one else. However, one might draw from the scene depicted on the vase that there might be a slight competition occurring. Why? because one woman sits before Apollo display that they are not equals; however the other woman stands strong before the god potentially creating a competition between the two.

- The image I found depicts Nymphs playing the flute and lyre before Apollo.
2. The scene depicts nymphs playing the flute and lyre before Apollo. The scene was engraved after the original by Piringer. The picture was found on Britannica Image Quest when I searched for Ancient Greece vases. The website did not provide a title for the work, however the picture is credited to De Agostini picture library.
3. I found the image above to be significant to our discussion of Rhetoric because in the photo, the nymphs are enticing Apollo with their songs. Rhetoric is all about the power of persuasion and in this image I can tell that he enjoys the song being played because it is dedicated to him or being played for him. Also, music is a form of rhetoric as well, the melody from the instruments may sound lovely and quite enticing to listen to.
4. I chose this image because I was immediately drawn to the fact that it was simple in design and only contained three people. I immediately thought that each person could represent one of the three main parts of rhetoric: ethos, pathos, and logos. Also, I noticed that one woman stands before Apollo while the other sits. The woman standing wears clothing too revealing, but stands tall and proud that she as a woman stands before a man, who happens to be a god. While the other appears to be quite modest in dress and humbles herself before him.

Understanding Rhetoric
Losh et al
My definition of rhetoric prior to reading Understanding Rhetoric was the art of persuasion. However, after the reading I feel as though I did not fully define rhetoric and would change the length of my definition. Why would I change the length of my definition? Because rhetoric is more than just persuasion, it has many different components to define it. Plato’s definition of rhetoric has a more negative view since he believed that it had the malicious intent to deceive others and lied to audiences. However his student, Aristotle had different views. He believed that rhetoric was educational and could provide examples of bad situations to large audiences so that they could learn from the mistakes. In addition to their perspectives of rhetoric, it has three main components: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos pertains to ethics or the credibility of the person presenting. Pathos is empathy or the emotion and logos is logic. Now, going forward, I would make sure to include pathos, logos, and ethos in my definition of persuasion, as well as the views of Aristotle and Plato. I feel that it is important to display every view possible to let others know that rhetoric can be used to be educational or depending on how it is used, could tell lies.
