Readings from “Empire Writing”

One of the main resources we used to contrast different viewpoints of the imperial conquest was Kipling’s The White Man’s Burden. In it he calls on the west and America in particular to take up the “civilizing mission” and to educate the savage parts of the world.

Another reading that helped contextualize the themes we discussed in class was Said’s Introduction to Orientalism. He explains what “Orientalism” is and how this mindset shaped how the imperial powers acted toward their colonies. It also shows how this view effected historical events like World War Two.
