Prompt 9

Prompt 9

The Appalachian people are being used as sort of a scape goat for social problems. They are being perceived as the last group of people that one can be derogatory to without being frowned upon. The reason it is essential for the media to portray the Appalachian region with this connotation is that it makes it acceptable. Basically, the media is able to reach a multitude of people and what the media says must be true so it instills in the mind of many people that treating the Appalachian people in this manner is okay. It seems like the human race always needs someone to pin the problems on. A group that can be blamed for any manner of problem small or large that may arise so it’s not the “good” people’s responsibility but it’s that groups. After it became frowned on to do this to other ethnic groups like African Americans or Native Americans, people turned their gaze to the Appalachian region to a somewhat disadvantaged people. Rather than building these fellow people back to their feet they used them as the new scape goat. The media took this idea and spread it to the minds of everyone in the United States and basically the world through t.v. shows like The Beverly Hillbillies and plays like the Kentucky Cycle.  The media presented this degrading image and this idea that it was okay to degrade Appalachian people and to treat them like the new scape goat.
