Prompt 8

When Donesky talks about how the Kentucky cycle is referred to as a drive by he is talking about the depth and detail that play goes into when it  portrays the aspects of the Appalachian culture. Although the pay doesn’t really leave out nay aspects of Appalachian culture considering it pretty much delves into Appalachian history from its beginning until the then present time. This made the play very long already and didn’t allow for the writer to go into too much depth regarding each cultural feature. By only scraping the surface of each of the many complex cultural phenomenon surrounding the Appalachian people, the projected image of the Kentucky Cycle became very negative. This was important because the play became just another negative portrayal of the Appalachian culture and people. Also, because it had won the Pulitzer prize, had guaranteed audiences, and guaranteed productions it was well publicized and shown all over the country. This negative portrayal of Appalachia was spread to the minds of many people. These people now had an inaccurate image in their mind of what the average Appalachian person did and how they behaved. They saw the Appalachian culture as uncivilized, violent, illiterate, and just degraded. The play only succeeded in having a negative impact on how people perceived Appalachia rather than the positive impact that it could have had if it had been better written.
