Steinberg uses the layout of generational progression in the book of Genesis to portray Barbie to be almost like a living entity. Barbie produces children with her husband and has friends that she associates with. These friends change as time goes on and shows the “changing” times as Barbie has a change in her social status, arrives at a new way of thinking, or develops a new trend.  This  analogy is very helpful in outlining where Steinberg is going with the rest of her article. It clearly connects to her talking about the different releases of Barbie that portray new trends, the newest perceptions of different cultures, and the most currents ways of thinking. Barbie keeps up with the times, setting a new standard as the old standard changes. Through making the connection between the genre of generational progression in Genesis and the historical progression of Barbie,  Steinberg provides an effective backdrop for her reader to be able to understand the enduring and influential effects Barbies have on each generation of people. In conclusion, Steingburg made an excellent rhetorical choice because not only does it help with a readers understanding, but it also makes the topic much more interesting and lively to read about.
