Two Articles

These two articles aren’t terribly dissimilar. Though they’re clearly about different topics, it strikes me that it would be nigh impossible to analyze Racism without using Critical Discourse Analysis. In fact I’d say that one of critical Discourse Analysis’ aims is to analyze discourse that fosters and employs racism! It’s all about the examination of discourse between a dominate group and a repressed one, and that fits in very well with how racism really works. On page 375 of Discourse and Racism, Wodak and Reisigil actually bring up examples of critical discourse about race and how certain philosophers/writers have treated the subject, particularly in response to the racial language and policies of the Nazi Regime. Overall, its almost impossible to separate a serious study of race and racism as a cultural institutions without Critical Discourse Analysis. Because as they are cultural artifacts, and driven by discourse, as most things are, they require this kind of study.
