So I think one of the interesting themes I’m noticing is that of citizenship and social mobility. So the ideal citizen is an educated, fit, well spoken, paragon of virtue, which at a certain time was an ideal that was obtainable only by the upper class. However this ideal was constantly repeated and emphasized in stories and public life as something ALL citizens should aspire to be. So over time, as the middle class expanded and became more and more able to achieve that ideal, the aristocracy started freaking out and scapegoating those teaching the new middle class as seditious charlatans.
