In The Beginning, There Was Barbie. TM.

Mattel has created a Universe, that is abundantly clear. The Barbie universe is a beautiful shimmering reflection of upper middle class America, an imperial consumerist power, employing quasi-feminism, and killing all enemies with kindness. With Mattel creating such a universe, which Weinberg goes on to describe with deftness, her opening use of the format of Genesis is almost inevitable. It perfectly supports her argument in every. Genesis starts of relatively simply and expands rapidly outward. It starts with the basic and moves towards the complex, but instead of Eve coming from the rib of Adam, in this case Eve came first, and then Ken was created as her companion.  In other ways, from here the story diverges, because after Genesis, God sort of took a back seat and allowed Adam and Eve to “go forth and multiply,” while this simply was impossible for Ken and Barbie, due to their lack of genitals. Instead God himself (Mattel) continues to create personally, he creates cars and playmates and playthings for his perfect creation, and offers her up as a the perfect role model for all who surround her. He loves his Barbie, and accepts Ken, even earring Ken. Even Weinberg kind of likes Barbie, she has all her merchandise, she must!
