Artifact 3 Mobile Telecommunications

Mobile Telecommunications

1.1     Introduction

Watching youtube videos, making calls, and texting loved ones and friends on our phones seems as a simple concept to the people that use it.  A hundred years ago, the concept seemed to be impossible, and even 50 years ago, the idea of a wireless mobile telecommunications connection seemed unreal.  Today, people tend to get mad when a video on their phone has to buffer and load for more than 30 seconds.  The wireless mobile telecommunications technology has had vast impacts on our world today.  In fact, “Wireless technology has become an essential part of life in many parts of the world as of 2011” [1].  The road to this technology took a long time, but eventually it took over and now dominates the telecommunications world.  This is the first time in history that it’s possible to communicate with people around the world in a matter of seconds.  This technology has even gone from just using it for phone calls or texts to even livestreaming sporting events or playing applications.  If it weren’t for this technology today, then people around the world would not be as connected as they are now.

2.1       What is Wireless Mobile Telecommunication

Wireless mobile communications are simply connections that can be made to access the internet without any hard wiring.  This allows someone to use something like a cell phone, which has no physical connection to routers or servers, to access the internet, hence the wireless aspect.  There are also different types of mobile telecommunication technologies including “analog cellular, hybrid analog/digital cellular, and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)” [4].  Analog cellular is a “traditional analog system that can use frequency division multiplexing.” [4].  Hybrid analog/digital cellular is a system in which “digitized voice and digital data is modulated onto the analog sine wave of the channel being used.” [4].  GSM is a “second-generation mobile system designed from the ground up without trying to be backward compatible with the older systems.” [4].  All these different wireless technologies have made huge impacts on our world.  Without these technologies, then people may not be as connected as they are now.  In fact, we use these different technologies just about every day, and the impacts have been monumental.

3.1       Impact of the Wireless Mobile Telecommunications

The wireless mobile technology has had a huge impact on people’s social lives around the world, especially in the subject of speed and efficiency.  Wireless allows people to communicate and connect anywhere now because of the wireless aspect of the new telecommunications.  As Guirong Zhang says, “it makes people become much closer with each other through texting, social networking apps, video or voice phone calling and any other social activities.” [2].  Zhang even goes on to say that it even provides us with a time of relaxation with the different options the technology has to offer [2].  The different applications mobile telecommunications allows people to use leaves no dull moment of a day.  Users are able to quickly access an application such as Netflix and stream videos or entertainment with the mobile telecommunication technology.  This technology also has different uses for it as well, such as work usage and almost any other thing the mind can imagine.  This technology is very flexible and leaves almost no restrictions on the user.  Although a large amount of positive impacts have come from this technology there are also some negatives.  People are starting to lose touch of the real world, and they’re spending more time on their phones than interacting with other humans.  In fact, “a recent study from the digital analytics firm Flurry show that we surprisingly spend on average almost 3 hours a day staring at our cellphones, totalizing nearly one day every week!” [3].  There are also even more studies that support this claim, and some studies have humans using mobile technology even more often.  With that claim though, people may be using those three hours on their phone a day to communicate with others.  This could mean that the mobile technology is used for mainly good and staying connected with others.  If it weren’t for this technology, people would not be as connected as they are now.  The mobile telecommunications business has had a huge impact, and humans have also found ways to improve it as well.

4.1       Human’s Impacts on Wireless Mobile Telecommunications

Mankind has found ways to improve mobile communications in significant ways over the past few years.  There are mainly four different kinds of cellular systems which are 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G.  These different systems just make up the different generations of wireless communications, and 4G is the most recent one.  1G systems “grew rapidly in the early 1980’s” [4] and continued to thrive for many years to come.  2G systems eventually took the place of 1G systems and this went all the way up until we got to our present day system.  The present day system we use today is the 4G systems which allows for the fastest mobile telecommunications technology we have.  4G systems allow for a higher and faster bandwidth than any other mobile technology before it.  The strides humankind have been able to make on such an interesting technology are very important.  Without this advancement in technology that humans have made, people in the world would not be as connected as they are now.

5.1       Conclusion

With the wireless mobile telecommunications technology implemented today, it allows for people to be more connected than ever before. The impacts the technology has made are monumental and the field continues to develop.  It has allowed for many positive impacts including efficiency in workplaces, and efficiency in communicating with family and friends.  The present day system we have is the 4G system which is the fastest and most efficient connection we’ve seen, and even better systems are still yet to be invented.  The future still holds a lot more for this field of technology, and with the new technologies, people will be able to keep and make even more connections than ever before on the wireless internet.
