For this artifact I pondered the idea of the last question provided on the assignment sheet which reads, “What if men could menstruate?”. I thought for a minute to really gathers my thoughts as they flooded my head. I soon and suddenly came to the shocking conclusion that I have never asked myself this question. In fact, I have never even pondered the concept. Immediately I thought whether or not if the question was inquiring about the vaginal bleeding, or the hormone surges and emotional moods swings that come all along with the bleeding. I very quickly made up my mind and definitely not wanting any of those effects taking a toll on my body… like would I bleed out of my penis or my rectum if a male was to bleed, and if not will my hormone of surge be testosterone? I had so many questions, like what emotions would be swinging? Rage? Anger? Aggression? Those were the first that came to mind thinking about testosterone. But what if guys turned super soft and cry over things randomly too? Not to say all girls do that, or will we be in the gym for 7 days straight out of every month lifting things just to lift things and grunting loudly will looking in the mirror and turn into macho men and then be completely normal the next 3 weeks? Hahaha I really have no idea.
I did a couple quick silly google searches to see what came up, and there were a handful of blob forum type sites with women saying that men in fact (not scientifically) do have a “period”. I was dying laughing reading some of these posts saying “My husband get all worked up and easily irritated by the littlest of things right at the beginning of the month” and “My boyfriend gets all moody during the week he is waiting on payday” and everything in between. I thought about these comments and quickly texted my girlfriend asking her if I ever get irritated or short with her around any specific time of the year or month or even week. She said, “I feel like you tend to get irritated more while driving and grocery shopping around the time you have a test or something due for school.” Her response totally caught me off guard because I was expecting like a “towards the end or beginning of the month” time frame, but it was interesting to see she noticed that those two events/instances correlated. I guess during those times I am so wrapped up in what I have to get done that I wasn’t as cognizant of letting things tick me off so easy.
So in my personal experience and opinion, through research though my girlfriend who knows me just as much as my mom, I would say that men may not menstruate, but I think ever guy has their own “period” time of the month or year where things are stressful and we tend to let our emotions get the best of us unintentionally.
