303WX Prompt 10

Upon reading the chapters from the Back Talk from Appalachia, written by Donesky and Cunningham, I was presented with two different view points.  One being Donesky’s stance, using the phrase to describe The Kentucky Cycle as a “drive by shooting” and having an up hauled response.  Cunningham’s take on the play really struck me as more analytical from a third persons perspective.  I found Donesky was very passionate in his stance on the play, leading him to be more intensely critical of the work, and not presenting the other side of the argument to its fullest.  I found that Cunningham was able to see both sides and presented that to his audience more clearly than Donesky.  Cunningham also analyzed the language the Robert Schenkkan used to defend his body of work, and to try to justify his intent.  Schenkkan tried to pass his play off as a “metaphor” in representing Appalachia, which Cunningham arguing that its not a metaphor if the information being presented is false or inaccurate.  I tend to agree with Cunningham’s presentation of how this play falls on a spectrum for all different types of people.  I like that he doesn’t necessarily defend the author, Schenkkan, but brings up the side that Schenkkan was trying to come from and express.
