Rough thesis 9/14

Using John Swales’ theory on discourse communities, I conclude that Southern Virginia University is able to affiliate with many discourse communities within the business/economics field, by using proper business lexis and appealing to people of different backgrounds. The text reaches out to people of different communities to make the business program attractive to potential students.

  1. 1. Be specific about discourse community affiliation. Don’t just say “many discourse communities;” tell us specifically which communities Southern VA is associated with. Otherwise, good job answering the questions.

    2. I think you are saying that SVA is acting as the discourse community’s “recruiter” in that it is attempting to draw in potential students from a variety of backgrounds.

    3. I am confused about where the business program fits in all of this. Is this a discourse community based on business? This goes back to question 1: make sure you identify the discourse community(ies) that SVA is affiliating itself with.

    4. No suggestions other that what I have previously mentioned. Good job!
