Portfolio Essay

As a writer I often lean toward complexity with lengthy sentences and big words. My primary challenge in this course was to create clear, concise writing. This struggle helped me to step outside of my comfort zone and utilize resources that I wouldn’t have considered before.

From EHR 102 I expected to write several long research based papers. But honestly, I also expected those papers to be analysis of text, much like the traditional literature classes I was exposed to in high school. I didn’t really expect to only have 3 papers or to have no final, although those were definitely a pleasant surprise. Through EHR 102 I learned how to construct different structures of arguments and I became more comfortable with writing intros and conclusions that were varied, not rigid and boring.

One of the main things I struggled with over all the papers was being concise and clear. Often I would have random ideas thrown in everywhere or I was afraid to save the main point of my argument until the end, which just made me not include as much introduction material on my topic and ultimately made it hard to follow for readers.

Overall my reviews generally said that I had good points, and that I would have a clear thesis and I maintained good credibility throughout, but my points were organized well together and they just needed more connection to make their purpose clear.
