In 2010 China hosted the world’s fair in the city of Shanghai. The fair was the largest in terms of geographic size in history and also had the highest attendance for a world expo in history with over 70 million visitors over the six month period. Breaking the old record held by the Osaka, Japan Expo in 1970. China went to great lengths to make the expo extravagant in all manners to demonstrate their emergence into the international community. The PRC spent over 11.96 billion Yuan but due to massive turnouts in attendance were still able to turn a profit of roughly 1 billion Yuan or approximately 150million USD. The government of the PRC went to vast lengths to ensure the success of the Expo and in most ways were successful. Events such as this and the 2008 Beijing Olympics demonstrated a more light hearten but no less important application of Chinese international capabilities.
