Using additional material, evaluating Kim as more than just a pawn to the British was an interesting task to complete. Looking at two articles there were connections to Kim through political and racial themes that I had not previously identified while reading the book. Michael Matin compares Kim to the Irish through the phrase “Irish Home Rule’ which is a play on Gandhi’s India Home Rule that I previously read in Indian Literature last year (Spring 2017). The other connection is through Orientalism with Patrick Williams’ article. Although the concept of Orientalism still seems to evade me, I understood the concept of Kims struggle with identity through his exposure to many different cultures and not being lead into one from a young age.
