Now that you’ve begun watching Matewan, in what ways does this film Appalachians differently than Deliverance? Compare the two films and discuss why Matewan is considered to be less negatively criticized for the ways in which it depicts Appalachians.
Within the first few minutes of Deliverance the people of the region were depicted as ______________. They all seemed very simple and as if they live in a deserted area. The child with the banjo seemed as if the only way he could communicate was through the music. There was a scene of a child who may have been actually a child of disability. Several times there is a reference that everyone there is related and incest. With Matewan, the film focuses more on the issue of the coal miners rather than the specific are and the people who are there. There are several parts where they make fun of particular people but it is less of a stereotyping thing than just showing the hardships of the situation. Deliverance is focused more on the stereotype of the Appalachian regions, or more of how others viewed them in the time. There are a few scenes in the movie that I don’t understand why it is there, but Im more interested that this is based off a book and how it was received? I havent enjoyed any depictions that were in Deliverance.
