Both Harney and Frost have been highly criticized for the ways in which they depict Appalachian people in their articles. Do you find the depictions problematic? If not, why not? If so, in what ways? For this answer, you should not merely discuss your impressions, but you should use specific examples from each text to back up your claims. In other words, what specific passages support your assertions and how?

Both Harney and Frost address a time when this area was highly unstable. They recount the life that was there, or said to be there, and they do their best to replicate the situations, culture, and language in writing.

Harney’s description seems to be fine, yet he does use words that could cause one to think that he is demeaning the culture such as pitiful, miserable, and rotting. I think that these add to the situation of the area. The descriptions of the houses and such describe a very poor living situations describing the interior of one house as sordid. If it is problematic, I think it could be because people don’t want to face the idea that this was a common occurrence in the area, although it cannot be representative of all Appalachia. He does not specifically say that this is representative of the entire areas, that this is only what he saw, or heard.
