Project 2: Digital Identity

Digital identity has become increasingly important due to increase usage of social media. As a class, we discussed the importance of maintaining a professional online presence because future employers do look ad a prospective employee’s social media accounts to see if they are a good representation for their company. In class, we were each given a consultant and a client to determine what the possibilities were to improve our social media sights and which ones to utilize more than another. My consultant recommended to me to show a little more interest in the Coast Guard through reposting on Facebook to show that I am interested in commissioning. I used ePortfolio as a blog to show interest in the Coast Guard. I changed my theme and added a tab the reads USCG for easy navigation to the information I talk about regarding the Coast Guard. Including certain themes and aspects to my social is important because if I give off the right image, it could help me with getting a job in the future, but also should be good representation of me for others to see, not just future employers.

Looking at the ePortfolio website, I wanted to change my theme from what I had to something more clean and easy to navigate. I change the theme to something more black and white, and I looked through my pictures and found one of a channel by my house that we take every time we go out on the boat. I chose the photo because it means something to me personally and it is recognizably the ocean.  I wanted to have a representation of the ocean, obviously to represent my desire to serve in the Coast Guard, but also to show an image I grew up with. The theme does well to accentuate the photo and make the post easy to find and navigate, which was also important to me.

The other addition I made to the ePortfolio was a Coast Guard tab so that I could start a blog about my experience and interest in the Coast Guard. After doing some research, I didn’t find much on what being in the Coast Guard was like, and if I do get into the Coast Guard, I plan to continue a blog to assist future people who are interested in the Coast Guard like myself.

Now my title is interesting and I chose it because it is a subtle way to say I am a big geek. I wanted this part of me to be represented, but I didn’t want it to be large and obtrusive, so only those who know Dr. Who will understand this catch phrase from the 10th Doctor.

Over all I think that this project allowed me to understand what others interpret from my social media. As Katy Meyers the author of “Manage your Digital Identity says”, “Keep it up to date.” I think that this project will extend past the classroom and allow me to continue and influence other people, and give a good impression of myself. I don’t want to solely attract future employers by being solely professional, I added these little quirks about myself, such as the title, to be myself and add personality.
