How does Burke’s theory of identification affect or speak to our study of digital identities?
So the first thing that comes to mind, it may or may not be on the right track, would be what you do with your social media and how original and unique it is. Burke talks about how A and B are close and similar, but remain unique. If you were to look at the Facebook of randomly selected cadets, there would be a common theme to their profile that would make them seem like the same person as other cadets here. Typically the profile picture is of the person in uniform, along with almost every one else, which doesn’t start out to a bystander who doesn’t know much about you. Now if you had something else as a profile picture and a military cover photo t may show that you have a personality outside of the military.
This helps with digital identity because yo don’t want to seem like another person from VMI whose entire life revolves around VMI. You want to show that you are a well rounded individual and that you have other interest than your college. Yes if you are applying for a job or commissioning, you want to have some part of VMI easily seen due to its prestige, it is like having brownie points with someone, but if that is what you consider to represent you the best, it may come off as if you are not a well rounded person.
