Movie: Hurcules

Hurcules is based during Ancient Greece and i would like to critique some of the art works in the movie. Here are the following 5 points i observed during this animated film.

1) The beginning of the movie begins with The Muses, the goddesses of the arts and proclaimers of hers. In other words they are the women who tell the story through song. During their introduction of the movies, the stories were projected on clay pots. This is historically accurate. Pots in the movie tell stories and are mostly black figures like we saw in Ajax and Achilies made by Exekias. It was typical that these vessels were made to spread the stories of heroes and people around the population or to record history.  While the women sing, the vases tell the story of the titans, those who came before the gods.

2) Next is when we have Hercules running into the square and there are men creating an arch in the post and lintel formation. Although this was used when the Stonehenge was created it was carried over into some greek architecture like some temples. Here it is shown in the process of being made but it is an example of a sturdy arch which is stabilized by the weight on the top.

3) The next part i would like to point out is the temple of Zeus when Hercules is told that he is not completely human. The outside of the temple looks like many other temples we studied in class. The columns which support the building are of the  doric order with a plain capital . there is the triangle at the top of the roof which holds a story carved as a relief. Then there is a plain alway leading to the sculpture of Zeus which is large and extremely stylized with curled hair and exaggerated features to make him seem more powerful.  It reminds me of the statue of Athena wish was extremely large to show power.

4) There is a sculpture of Achilles that i think is a great re-creation of greek sculptures. It is in line with the motif or the perfect athlete. This could be more of a later sculpture due to its positioning as if he is in battle. He is wearing the typical helmet and using a spear both common to the time period.

5) Now for the inaccuracies. The biggest upset thatIi have is how did scar end up like a throw rug if  he was malled by hyenas. Just kidding, there is no mention of people having plastic figurines of heroes of fan merchandise that you buy at concerts like the shirts and the shoes and the cups. This of course was added in for some humor and raletability but it is very inaccurate with the time period they are trying to depict in the movie. Of course this is an animated film so there are other things which are depicted somewhat like greek art and not at the same time, but with the things that were right like i mentioned above, the film did a good job.
