Assignment 7/13

What jargon have you noticed in your artifact?

My artifact contains jargon that is not only relevant in economics and business fields, but also in engineering and scientific fields as well. The terms used in the article, such as “control variables”, “equilibrium theory”, “frequency and amplitude”, and “dynamics”, are used in describing economic, technological, and scientific data, and thus establish a lexical relationship between these three fields.

What are you learning about your chosen discourse community?

The most significant lesson I’ve learned thus far about economics and business, my chosen discourse community, is that the majority of said discourse is based on two phenomena: statistical data and market behaviors. In my chosen article, “Physics and Economics”, by Rick Nelson, the central theme is explaining both why and how computer modeling (a method that engineers and scientists use to simulate experiments) can be a valuable tool for economists to predict market outcomes. This works by simulating “virtual markets with artificially intelligent agents, who represent individuals, banks, hedge funds, etc.”, (Nelson 1), analyzing price change and market behavior, and then taking proactive measures to achieve economic stability. Similar to analyzing textual evidence in ERH101-03, I suspect that data and market behavior will be the primary subjects of analysis in my economics and business major.
