Romantic Period ~1770 – 1850

 

One of Delacroix’s best known works, the painting depicts a bare-breasted Liberty leading Parisians of mixed social and economic backgrounds into battle.

This image shows less emphasis on religious doctrine and the beauty of nature, instead showing a romanticized image of revolution; a woman leading the charge over men, triumphant, beautiful in her own right. This is a powerful piece and should evoke a strong reaction. This comes as close to demonstrating the time as any image, in my opinion.
