I wanted to elaborate more on the finalization process of our IRB from COL Sanborn’s corrections. Our hypothesis, which states: “we hypothesize that if you get a targeted number of hours of sleep between 7-9 hours, you will have a higher chance of achieving academic success.” COL Sanborn said our hypothesis needs more detail. I thought our hypothesis was fine, but we made changes that are more specific to sleep and academic success. We originally wanted to sample 15 boys and 15 girls at VMI, but COL Sanborn does not think this is a good idea because VMI is not 50/50 boy to girl ratio, but is 80/20 and it would not be indicative of VMI’s Corps of Cadets. For our data collection, we are using sheets of all the rooms in barracks and randomly selecting rooms and asking if people will complete the survey or not. The last main change we had to make was our research design. We are giving people a range of GPA’s they fall under and are asking them to circle/check which GPA they have at VMI. We originally did 1.5-1.8, 1.8-2.2, etc. but there is a problem with this because 1.8 falls under 2 categories. To fix this, we changed our range from 1.5-1.9, 2.0-2.2, etc. These were the necessary changes our group how to make, and because we listened to COL Sanborn, our IRB was approved.
