In the past I have always maintained that leading by example is my leadership style of choice. While this method is a means to an end, the true job of a leader in my eyes is to transform subordinates and peers. It is for this reason that I believe transformational leadership is the most objectively beneficial style to pursue. A leader is tasked with not only accomplishing a mission and demonstrate expertise, but also to ensure an organization, group, or function has longevity. I feel my fear of judgement and occasional lack of confidence prevent me from exercising leadership to the fullest. This coincides with my Big 5 Personality results, as neuroticism– which I scored much above the high values in– includes these qualities. Moreover, my recurring habit of procrastination may affect my preparedness and worsen these anxieties (0).
Moreover, I believe there is a healthy amount of reluctance that all leaders can benefit from. By lacking personal gain and selfish interest, one’s capability to lead may be heightened instead. According to my Big 5 Personality Quiz results, I demonstrate a high level of openness to experience, a beneficial characteristic to leaders, as it allows for one to grow as he or she undergoes more of a leadership journey. I hope that this might apply to my own leadership experience as I grow into the shoes of responsibility at VMI and in the military (9).
