Chapter 6 activities
- Creates a sense of sadness and misery. This is created by the broken pieces of wood that can be concluded as pieces from a home. Also, the young boy puts his head up to a doll that is probably is the one thing he has left.
- I would say that my response is very similar to the commonly encountered pictures. Figure 6.1 shows both grieve and misery while also being wide enough to show the disaster behind the young boy. By using a child it shows that the disaster affects everyone, no matter their age. A child symbolizes youth which conveys a greater emotional appeal to most adults.
- I would includes this photo in an argument because it shows many aspects of the disaster. The broken wood shows the building disaster and how it will affect the environment. Also the picture shows the effect it has emotionally on humans. The child clearly shows misery towards the situation as he closely holds his doll. Using a child creates a much larger response to the situation.

“Becoming a Mother Made Me Even More Pro-Choice”
The author shows her knowledge as a mother by describing her children. Her only source is her own motherhood, it could be stronger if she had multiple views. This weakens her persuasive aims however her point of view strengthens it. The author is being fair because she has children but conveys the pro-choice side of the argument. The author uses the mother/father community which strengthens her persuasive aim. She creates a caring and sentimental character that allows mothers and their families to see her side. She wants the audience to feel kindness and understanding. To achieve this she uses her own story and motherhood. This view helps to persuade other mother and understand the hardships of having a child. The emotional appeal supports the claim-reason-warrant relationship and appeals to credibility.
“Science is Giving the Pro-Life Movement a Boost”
The writer shows her knowledge by using multiple sources, mostly people containing a phD which makes the statements accurate. This concentrates her persuasive aim on details rather than emotion. The author is being fair in her article. She does not use community values as the article is mostly comprised of data. She develops a very professional character as she included all data that was necessary to her topic. The author does not use a strong appeal to pathos, she wants them to understand. Feelings are not what she sets out to achieve. The lack of emotional appeals supports the logical reasoning and appeals to the credibility of the article.
