The September 11 Tattoos article is different than most of the other readings in that each tattoo has a different “author” or owner of the piece. In taking a strict approach to answering the question of; how has the authors of civic discourse used Kairos in their argument, we can say that we do not have an answer. The three tattoos in Remix do not have a date for when the tattoos were inscribed. With that said, we can estimate and expand on what an ideal time may have been to receive these lasting memoirs.
Of the three tattoos, only one has any date regarding the picture. The last picture is of a man in a hard hat, white t-shirt with rolled sleeves, and a star necklace. The caption says that this picture was taken on April 10, 2003 which means that the tattoo was bought between September 11, 2001 and then. Based on the fact that the man is a blue collar construction worker attending a rally to support the troops and has a tattoo remembering the event, I would guess that he got the tattoo early 2002. He must have needed some time to react to the event because it may have hit him harder than others and but he feels strongly about the event because the date is a very prominent part of the tattoo which is too forward for him to have been cautious about getting the tattoo. On the other hand, if we consider the author of the pictures to be the photographer, the Kairos would be the timing of the event and the symbolism of a rally to support the troops.
The other two tattoos both have symbols clearly referencing the attack on September 11, but does not have a date like the third picture. In this way, they are slightly less aggressive. Both have signs of peace or forgiveness in the rose and in the hands of God reaching down to touch the World Trade Center buildings. Due to the slightly more passive artwork, I can see the owner of the second tattoo taking a bit longer to get the tattoo. The Kairos in this situation would be late 2002 because he wanted to give the event some time to set into themselves and on the nation before they stirred the pot by making people think about it every time they saw the tattoo. The first tattoo surprised me in that it was taken at a Ball on September 15, 2001. This is immediately after the event and the owner of the tattoo must have felt very strongly about the event and been extremely comfortable with tattoos, but not have had anyone close be directly affected by the attack. I say that because should a loved one been affected, I do not believe that the owner of the tattoo would be sure that they want to live with a reminder for the rest of their life within 3 days of the attack.
