The Tethered Generation by Kathryn Tyler states that today’s youth, classified as Generation Y, has a lack of independence and skills due to the influence of current technology. Tyler’s argument, while possible, uses extreme examples. She uses people such as Kate Achilles in order to show how youth are far to dependent on the parents when many other generations could only depend on themselves in order to connect to the readers. The comparison of connectivity to dependency is rational in her defense yet one does not necessarily lead to another. The author further shows this use of extreme examples to support her argument when uses parents who hover, or helicopter, over their kids. Parents have always tried to connect to children into adulthood and the introduction of technology, while making it easier to do, did not revolutionize this occurrence. Kathryn Tyler uses a 2006 research report on Generation Y’s work ethic to support her argument that technology has caused only “adequate” performance yet she fails to show other generations results to compare even these accusations are even useful. While technology may have cause some lack of independence and amplifies the occurrence of “helicopter parenting” without more comparisons on other generations results from similar research Tyler’s argument is very one sided and inconclusive.
