Guide to Writing in a Genre

Reflection

In Portfolio #2, Guide to writing in a genre, the assignment was to create an essay that educated an audience on the characteristics of a genre, in order to teach them how to effectively write in it. My essay, The Genre of Imagination, remarks on the long history of the fantasy genre while explaining the characteristics, in order to effectively teach an audience the purpose and strategies of writing in the genre. Based on the history of the genre and the ability to use it to create personal worlds of imagination for others to read I was able to engage an audience in order to drive them to learn how to write in the genre. The essay transitions from the multiple conventions that define the genre and in the end connected these conventions to describe the strategies one would take to write in the genre. While I was able to use connecting details and examples I still needed to work on my ability to proofread my final drafts. Sentences in the essay were still awkward and distributed the flow; this could be fixed by utilizing the skill of simplifying run on sentences through more extensive proofreading. The essay was able to effectively address the assignment yet I still have a lot to learn in my development as a writer. Reading out loud would have greatly helped me in correcting the small mistakes in this essay in order to fix the grammatical and ineffective flow of some of sentences. In comparison to my first Portfolio, I can already see the progression in condensing my thoughts into clear ideas and how this in result is making my ability to address an audience with a specific purpose much more effective.
