Harney and Frost both have similar views of the Appalachian region, even though they described it in different ways. According to them both, the region has this old, behind the times kind of feel. Frost mentioned the “Pioneer Life” that the Appalachians live. They still seem to gravitate to that life that the first settlers lived. That seems like a pretty fair assessment. There are mentions of log cabins, and jobs like blacksmiths, millers, cobblers by Frost. To go along with this, Harney mentions cottages and cattles. These all show the simple living and the dependence on nature shown in the Appalachian region. Those qualities are also pretty agreeable if a person knows anything anout the region. Confederacy is also mentioned which does have strong ties to the region. Harney talked about how the people of the Appalachian live a life similar to those after the Civil war. That could not be any more true. An argument could be made that conferacy does not have much to do with the northern part of the region but it definitely has it effect on the southern part. Harney and Frost’s depictions of the Appalachian region do not seem at all problematic. They seem to have great familiarity with the region and described it accurately.
