  1. Alex,
I thought the paper was very interesting and insightful. I honestly think this would be a really cool theme for your capstone project, especially if you follow through with the idea of doing research on the topic here in Lexington. Will you include philosophical components to the project? Because I feel that this may turn out looking like an ECBU type of project about the economy. Lastly, have you looked into any literature that comprises this theme of the current state of poverty and/or the effects it has on Americans? This might be an interesting aspect to add to you possible capstone.

  2. Ramsey,
I believe that your choice to chose this topic is well thought out. This paper shows clear thoughts and research. For the capstone project things that should be asked would be like because this paper is mostly research and the capstone is supposed to be something that summarizes your English major how would you work different types and connections to your argument? Also, I like the idea of doing research in the rockbridge area to continue research like what COL. McDonald had said.

  3. Alex,

I agree with your suggestion that the issues you treat in this paper are ones that could easily provide a window (or windows) into a case study of Rockbridge County. There are plenty of resources on which to draw for such a project. Here are a few that might help you decide what issue/issues you want to be the focus of a possible capstone project. Your study wouldn’t necessarily need to cover as much ground as the ones (below) done by teams of W&L students. You could dive more deeply into one concern, if you wanted.

A helpful resource about poverty in the state of Virginia that is searchable by county:

Research report done by W&L students and updated in 2016: “A guidebook was created to acquaint Washington and Lee University students, faculty, and staff with the Rockbridge area, with a particular focus on poverty-related issues.”

An earlier study in 2008 also done by W&L students: “This report attempts to correct the record by accurately representing poverty and views of poverty in the Rockbridge area; determining the size, extent, and duration of the problem; describing and evaluating existing service delivery mechanisms; suggesting areas for cooperation, coordination, and integration between governmental and non-governmental organizations; and offering suggestions for future community-based research endeavors. Note, however, that this document is emphatically not a referendum on any particular actor or policy and does not
purport to exhaustively discuss poverty issues in this area. Rather, it seeks to raise fundamental, urgent, and provocative questions about poverty in the Rockbridge area.”

Look forward to talking with you about the possibilities. This could be a really exciting project, in part, because it could have a real impact on this local community.

    Regards,
    COL McDonald
