Style Portfolio assignments in my Language and Style course offered me a chance to analyze an artifact and its rhetorical situation. It also allowed me to use a similar style and rhetorical strategies to create an effective piece of my own on the same topic. This example I wrote about, as the portfolio is titled, “Misconceptions of Islam and Terrorism.” This assignment accomplished the goal 1) use rhetorical strategies in an academic, civic, or professional situation. I used rhetorical questions, the emotions of the 9/11 attacks, and I used rhetoric to persuade the audience that Islamic extremists are not Muslim. Grouping them with the true muslim citizens of the United States is undeserving. This message goes against the average perspective in America so I was also required to argue my points effectively, which is another goal of an English degree.
