Non-Fiction Genre Studies: Parts of a Whole

My course in Non-Fiction Genre Studies was my best opportunity to craft creative works. I began the course evading having to write about anything personal until I realized that less personal was less powerful. Throughout my undergraduate degree as an English Major I became very comfortable writing academically and professionally. This class forced me out of my comfort zone and this genre of writing turned out to be relaxing and exciting. I always looked forward to pride in my essays because they not only reflected my writing style but also my memories and observations. I learned that writing creatively requires a strict attention to detail. Detail is the bet way to invite the audience or readers into the writing as if they were also there, experiencing the memory with you. In this specific piece I used photography and writing to relate my connection to my parents. I wanted to articulate the fact that I am neither of them exactly, but I am both of them in so many ways.
