Gorgias’ definition and purpose of rhetoric embraces the sophistic philosophy oh rhetoric. He was very powerful in rhetoric as he rejected the status of sophist in favor for rhetorician. He was still known as an “old sophist”. As sophists mastered the knowledge of language so did Gorgias as he was asked to serve as an ambassador for Athens. His idea of Kairos made a huge contribution to the rhetorical theory. His thoughts ok kairos seemed to be based on philosophy that can be used even in present day unknowingly. His focus on sophists philosophy was complimented by the thought of sophists being their to shape young men as some were only there for their master skills of a language. This just helps compliment my definition of rhetoric as I believe rhetoric can be found in everything and is used in ways that you don’t even think.
Grogias in his very detailed and descriptive Enconium is trying to persuade the people of two tasks. His first task is to show the people that their is two sides to every story. That there is two sides and that both sides can be argued and that both can be correct. He is attempting to explain how an argument can be approached in multiple perspectives. His approach and defense was more organized than Defense insofar.
