The concept of panopticism is, in simplest terms, the idea that there are often subtle influences behind rhetoric. Similar to conspiracy theorist’s belief that there are shadow puppeteers who pull the strings of government, a panoptic argument may have undertones of influence that is often overlooked because, to the inexperienced eye, an audience might see only what the writer wants them to see.
One instance of panopticism on a societal scale is in the selective manner that the media presents information to the public. Television networks are one such vessel for panopticism because there is always a chance that they are also attending to their own interests in terms of ratings, political agendas, etc.
I personally see panopticism as the crafting artificial truths. Having understanding or at least awareness to panopticism allows individuals to be less inclined to simply believe what they are told and search for the underlying intentions of the information they are presented.
