This essay assignment examines Frankenstein‘s cultural circulation through the lens of political cartoons. It examines, particularly, the way in which the Creature is portrayed. Shelley’s creature is intelligent and less disgusting and monstrous than the contemporary portrayals. Contemporary portrayals, as examined in this essay, portray the Creature as a beastly being, incapable of deep thought or even communication. Furthermore, the contemporary creature is seen with bolts coming out of both sides of its neck; this originates from the 1931 Frankenstein movie using lightning to bring the Creature to life, which is a stark contrast from Shelley’s much less dramatic origin story. However, though the Creature is portrayed differently, the main themes of creation, science, and destruction are stillĀ present.
