Biology of Gender Reflection

The biology of gender class that I had partaken this summer has really opened my eyes. It has opened my eyes and made me more aware of the issues that surround us as people in the world today. It also has made me aware of some of the social issues of the united states. Previously i had known a little about the issues at hand. But I never knew that they were this serious in the united states and the world as a whole. I have now expanded and learned more information regarding issues that many face when dealing with gender and equality. I also know understand a lot more about the human anatomy learning the different parts of women’s bodies and males as far as the different procedures like circumcisions for both sexes. During class one thing that stuck with me most is going over how different people are prosecuted due to their gender identity. Transgenders and women across the world are prosecuted because of their bodies.

One of the major issues that caught my attention throughout the class was artifact 5 it had dealt with circumcision. This was an interesting issue because I thought I knew a lot about my body. I was made more aware of the different things that come from circumcision. Things like urinary tract infections. And how the surgical procedures could affect the males actually partner. I was unaware of how america was the leading place dealing with circumcisions and we stand with the rest of the world. The biggest eye opener for me is the effects it has on women that do the surgical procedure. I was unaware there was a procedure for women and the different types that could be performed. Due to these procedures being performed it has negatively affected women around the globe.woman are negatively affected by these procedures such as piercings and other types of circumcisions. What i’ve learned in this class is the female body is sacred and things like the removal of the clitoris are very harmful to a woman’s body. These things have proven to not be beneficial to the world. This has showed me just how important of an issue this really is in today society.

Another major issue that sparked my arousal in this course was that of artifact 7 in this artifact I expressed my feelings on the stereotypes that are associated with many that experience gender identity. IN this I explained how the world mistreats you because you dont conform to your original sex at birth and are wrongly prosecuted. Many of the people that deal with these issues they hope that people will leave them alone and hope that those issues could possibly go away somehow. I knew little about this topic and how individuals were targeted because of the way they truly feel. Transgender male and females are widely targeted in the country of america. Many people don’t take inconsideration of how these individuals feel. This class made me realize that these are people too, and that they need to feel happy and be accepted. At first because of my own views, I believe that these people were doing something wrong. But I know that everyone has their own life to live and they feel like they are making the right choice in who they are. The sad part is many of these people are assaulted verbally and physically by others who don’t understand them. This could be seen as a form of racism and this touches my heart. Because of this class I was able to fully understand what these people go through and I feel for them.

The final artifact that really stuck with me was that of artifact 6 it deals with menstruation. The cycle which all women partake in. This issue is pressing because a lot of people that aren’t women don’t understand how this cycle works and or educated about this. This cycle is a natural beauty for all women. In country like nepal it’s sad to learn that women are attacked and even shunned in their own countries. People around the world don’t know enough about this to know this is a part of woman natural parameters since the beginning of time. Menstruation isn’t harmful and many people aren’t educated enough about this. Learning this in class opend my eyes i never thought this would actually be a real issue seeing here in america we learn this in sex education and gender studies classes. I believe in order for the issue to no longer be an issue people need to be taught about this pressing issue.

All in all, this class has opened my eyes to many important issues. I’m glad I partook in this class the issues that we highlighted were ones I never really understand well and didn’t know much about. I am fully aware now of these issues that surrounded males and females alike. Even what gender identity is and how it affects many individuals. I believe that the world should be more aware of these issues and how important they are.

Gender and identity and stereotypes are still a huge thing in today’s world. Many transgenders have been persecuted attacked and verbally put down because of how they truly feel about themselves. In today’s world they are looked on as outcasts and even shunned in today’s world. Though as a society we are making improvements this still is a huge problem that needs to be addressed once and for all.

A man that fell victim to his choice of lifestyle is a man named Robert Eads who was a transgender American that was born in Toccoa, Georgia. He was in a documentary regarding his transgender lifestyle, that dealt him many consequences for his decision. He was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and was rejected by the medical community, which led to his death. The film as featured other affects, such as his family treating him ill and not speaking to him. Yes, not having a family support your endeavors is heartbreaking, but having some sort of support system is the key component in finding solace in any situation at hand.

Robert eads was a transgender american that was born in toccoa georgia. He was presented in a film that dealt with his transgender lifestyle. He had to deal with many consequences. He had ovarian cancer was shunned by the medical community. Ultimately it ended with his death. The film should any didn’t perspectives regarding his family and how they treated him. Life is hard if your family is not supporting your ideals. Not having family structure that supports you leads to many dark and narrow roads. The southern comfort transgender conference SoCo for short is a gathering place for all peoples that have gone through the transgender spehere. This conference protects these individuals and allows them to feel loved by one another and welcoming place for them. This is a place that they are accepted. The way that the film portrays gender identity as people who act in a way different from their biological sex illustrates or how they should act. Robert is with a man named Lola whos identifies as a woman. They both have changed to the opposite of their original sexes. They both throughout the film exhibit discontent regarding their identity. Gender disorder makes them feel like there is something wrong with them. This makes people that are transgender feel that they are unacceptable in society.

There are many stereotypes that are associated with transgenders in society today. Many of the stereotypes today fall under different categories. Many people believe that these individuals are sick mentally and need help. Many people also say that these individuals are confused about who or what they really are. May also believe that these people will kill themselves .According to USA today, “41% of transgenders try to kill themselves at some point in their lives, compared with 4.6% of the general public”. People that are transgender re commonly attacked. And persecuted throughout the world. Though these problems are around they have slightly improved some of the years to movements like LGBT and other activist groups that support same sex opposite sex things.

The SoCo has shown a huge step in trying to correct some of the wrongs that are associated with these people. It shines a light on what life is really like for these individuals. And some of the issues they deal with day by day. SoCo is the perfect place to try and address these issues providing a place for people to be safe. These issues need to be addressed world wide it is truly a problem that we must correct.

What is female circumcision many wonder well it is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. There are four main types of circumcision that can be performed on female. Type I also known as clitoridectomy, this type consists of partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or its prepuce. Type II is also known as excision, the clitoris and labia minora are partially or totally removed, with or without excision of the labia majora.Type III is the most severe form, it is also known as infibulation or pharaonic type. The procedure consists of narrowing the vaginal orifice with creation of a covering seal by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and/or labia majora, with or without removal of the clitoris. The appositioning of the wound edges consists of stitching or holding the cut areas together for a certain period of time to create the covering seal. A small opening is left for urine and menstrual blood to escape. An infibulation must be opened either through penetrative sexual intercourse or surgery.

Type IV: This type consists of all other procedures to the genitalia of women for non-medical purposes, such as pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterization. Today in most African countries Female circumcision is practiced. Many women practice this because they believe that this will help the body but in fact it harms the body. It can cause urinary infections complications with birth and sexual dysfunction. The effects of circumcision is sexual life is tough. Depending on the type you can feel nothing and lose nerve ending because of these procedures. According to an article by unicef this is a growing problem today. “A lot of countries the practice is being abandoned but due to the rise of populations and not enough education it continues to grow.

Most women before fifty have some sort of FGM”(unicef) it is a cultural thing FGM debates back to the times of mummies. It is symbolized as a rite of passage into womanhood. Methods like education and awareness of how harmful it is to your body has tried to correct this issue. Methods like aids and community involvement have been a measure to try and stop this. All in all this is harmful to women and even men and something must be done to stop this and raise awareness.

Male

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the penis. The procedure is fairly common for newborn boys in certain parts of the world, including the United States. Circumcision after the newborn period is possible, but it’s a more complex procedure.Circumcision is a religious or cultural ritual for many Jewish and Islamic families, as well as certain aboriginal tribes in Africa and Australia. Circumcision can also be a matter of family tradition, personal hygiene or preventive health care. Sometimes there’s a medical need for circumcision, such as when the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back (retracted) over the glans. In other cases, particularly in parts of Africa, circumcision is recommended for older boys or men to reduce the risk of certain sexually transmitted infections.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. However, the AAP doesn’t recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns. The AAP leaves the circumcision decision up to parents — and supports the use of anesthetics for infants who have the procedure” the benefits of the procedure range from easier hygiene , decrease risk urinary tract, prevention of penile problems and more. In america it is more prevalent in america for circumcisions because of things like porn and the self image of the body. Due to cultural factors like this and it is widely accepted that Americans are more prone to these circumcisions.African males are being encouraged to get circumcisions because it is culturally accepted in most of their tribes to Many perform rituals and rites of passage if you perform these. Within these cultures that love circumcision it is harmful because most don’t get the proper care after they are cut many don’t see actual doctors they just perform this on their own. This can lead to various infections.

Circumcision today is widely practiced in many countries like the U.S it has huge benefits and widely acceptable. There are benefits to both for men and women but there are also risks that come with this as well. People need to be educated about the long term effects of circumcision and not just the short term. We all need to take a step back and observe what’s really going on after all this is our bodies are our temples.

“Menarche is the first menstrual cycle, or first menstrual bleeding, in female humans. From both social and medical perspectives it is often considered the central event of female puberty, as it signals the possibility of fertility”. Females experience this all at very different ages. The timing of it occurs biology depending on the female. The cycle occurs due to external factors and when the body is ready the cycle can happen at different times but mainly around the same time of the month.it is hard to say worldwide what age exactly the cycle begins due to factors of race and ethnicity but typically it occurs around the age of 14. Here in the united states average is about 12 years old.

Worldwide there is a few about the menstrual cycle. In many parts of the world it seena sacred and a huge part of womanhood. Other parts it’s not so deeply loved. Women are shunned and even ashamed because of it. In places like america some indian groups like the cherokee and iroquois symbolize womanhood for women in their tribes. The cycle that these people take begins the next step to becoming a woman. In america it is celebrated usually by things like period parties. Mothers are happy for their daughters and teach them how important it is. They celebrate becoming an adult and teach them what the cycle means and how its regulated what can occur during the cycle.

In other rural countries like nepal and some places and some parts of africa. Many of these women are shunned from their towns. For women in nepal life is hard and agonizing once they get their period. Men think women are disgusting and unclean once they bleed. Women are not allowed to be in the home for weeks once they get their periods. They must move into a home where only women that are on their periods are. The living conditions in these little homes is scarce women have to fend for themselves and could be exposed to infections because they are not clean. They are not allowed to eat the meat or touch things because they are deemed as unworthy because they bleed.

Because of the world not being educated enough about women’s bodies this put women in an awkward position. This causes them to fear their bodies and something natural that God intended for them to do. Because not enough people are educated about that causes people to not understand what’s going on with the female body. This puts some of the girls at risk and can ultimately have repercussions within the girls life.

essay addressing stereotypes

Stereotypes have been a thing of the present for men and women for thousands of years. It’s hard to truly understand how a man and women would truly express themselves due to these gender stereotypes. Many of the pressures of stereotypes come from loved ones friends even parents , even those that struggle with their own sexuality( third gender). Social media and the social norms have a lot to do with this in today’s society and because of these norms generations to come have to hold the weight of this on their shoulders.

Due to social norms many people take offense or get angered by those individuals of the same or opposite sex act out of the norm. Many of the individuals that are angered think like “ if i acted like that when i would have been forsaken by my peers etc”. Today the main thing any human being wants to feel like they belong that people can accept them for who they are. People take measures like bullying and harassing people out of the norm and trying to make themselves feel better by putting down another individual whose is happy with their orientation.

Sexuality is a huge thing that deals along the lines of stereotypes. Many people hide their true feelings about what they are because they are scared of what society will think about them. This is a huge problem along heterosexual males in today society. All of social media is to blame from how the porn industry has changed the look on how you should feel about yourself. But really i feel like the real problem is how people feel about themselves, Insecurity is one thing that all people of the world struggle with. I believe because of all these factors with insecurity cause suicide to be prevalent when it comes to people sexual orientation. Believe that the world should be more into self worth and that you actually matter and make a difference. I believe that a seminar or like a educational class would be helpful with this issue. Education is at the heart of individuals and this could help educate people about this.

I never realized that stereotypes played such a huge role in today’s world. I thought that this issue only was around race and affected those when the issue of race is brought up. I think the awareness of this needs to be addressed to all people to educate them on the harms of these gender stereotyping we need to be more activate in addressing the issue. How can we help this issue by encouraging to tell more people to get educated about the harms of gender stereotyping and how we can make a better world for tomorrow.

American culture is my topic for gender and culture. There are many effects due to economy social and political organization and other factors that have contributed to the changes in gender constructs in the united states.
The fact of the matter is the economy and our cultural heavily effects that of gender and culture. In the american culture it is typical for most children to be born and follow a bilateral kinship between two parents. Generally the offspring will inherit the father’s last name when being born. This follows the patrilineal guidelines which traces descendants through the male family line or ancestry. Though this is true it doesn’t matter what the offspring is it too can also follows the mother’s last name and take over matrilineal lines of the family. Hats the interesting part of american culture that it can follow one or the other mother or father or generally inheritance of both mother and father. They also used shared kinship. Grandparents are a huge example of such.
Economy has played a huge role in culture. Typically in the american culture it is common to herd and participate in farming and agricultural jobs. These are jobs that in american culture are seen as manly jobs. But women can to take part in the same realm. Women in american cultures are seen a nurtures. So in the example of farming a women duty in american culture would be two feed the livestock and ase and look after the baby animals. Due to to the effects of the economy and industrialization throughout american culture the roles of men and women have shited. Typically in the early 1940’s women were never in the workforce they operated from the home. Now decades later you see women and men working together in these work environments. This is due to the changes and growth of the world through economics and commercialization.
The mosu of china are a patrilineal group their culture follow the ancestors of men down the line. An example of a matrilineal culture would be the cherokee indians or the iroquois indians, These pastoral people generally named their children and cultural practices from women. Women are held sacred for those cultures where men are prevalent in china.
All and all gender and culture has changed and plays a huge part in the world today. Through the use of industrialization and commerlisim it has defined and changed the roles of men and women in the world today. I think the roles of men and women will generally continue to increase and shape each other.

Artifact 3

The global gender gap is the index ranking of countries between men and women it assesses the state of gender equality in a country. The index looks at four specific areas to determine the results health education economy and politics. These are the measurements used to determine the gender gap.
Iceland Norway and Sweeden. are the top three countries ranking on the global gender gap.The three highest-ranking countries have closed over 84% of their gender gaps, while the lowest-ranking country has closed only a little over 50% of its gender gap. It “assesses countries on how well they are dividing their resources and opportunities among their male and female populations, regardless of the overall levels of these resources and opportunities. Swaziland zambia trindad ran in dead last in the gender gap for 2018. The factors that also go into this are those of accessible work education for all men and women. No matter how little it is, is these things provided equally for both sexes.
AS of right now the United states sits at 49 on the global us gender gap. The united state is not top ten because our means of work available to both men and women are substantly low. Due to our innate culture of limiting women to certain jobs its typical males who dominate the workforce. And the accessibility to education to everyone is not the most affordable causing us to suffer in the gender gap. All the top 10 countries have closed majority of their gender gaps allowing all the same opportunities for males and females alike. I think one thing the U.S could do to increase their rank is make education available and easily affordable to all male and women alike.
Another big issue with this that of women’s roles. Women can become pregnant and be unable to work and contribute in a society. This contributes to the gender gap because this now takes women out of working roles and back at home causing the gap between women and males to ever increase further. Seen in american culture men are the kings of domestic responsibility. Majority of the source of economy being in the work force and other daily needs are provided by men. IN america men hold all the responsibility and everything for the most part solely relies on them. While more womanly duties rely on women like being home.
I think without major countries shifting their views on male and females roles in their countries could be good for the gender gap. It should allow equal opportunity for all men and women alike. This could also make the world a better place.
