What is female circumcision many wonder well it is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. There are four main types of circumcision that can be performed on female. Type I also known as clitoridectomy, this type consists of partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or its prepuce. Type II is also known as excision, the clitoris and labia minora are partially or totally removed, with or without excision of the labia majora.Type III is the most severe form, it is also known as infibulation or pharaonic type. The procedure consists of narrowing the vaginal orifice with creation of a covering seal by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and/or labia majora, with or without removal of the clitoris. The appositioning of the wound edges consists of stitching or holding the cut areas together for a certain period of time to create the covering seal. A small opening is left for urine and menstrual blood to escape. An infibulation must be opened either through penetrative sexual intercourse or surgery.
Type IV: This type consists of all other procedures to the genitalia of women for non-medical purposes, such as pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterization. Today in most African countries Female circumcision is practiced. Many women practice this because they believe that this will help the body but in fact it harms the body. It can cause urinary infections complications with birth and sexual dysfunction. The effects of circumcision is sexual life is tough. Depending on the type you can feel nothing and lose nerve ending because of these procedures. According to an article by unicef this is a growing problem today. “A lot of countries the practice is being abandoned but due to the rise of populations and not enough education it continues to grow.
Most women before fifty have some sort of FGM”(unicef) it is a cultural thing FGM debates back to the times of mummies. It is symbolized as a rite of passage into womanhood. Methods like education and awareness of how harmful it is to your body has tried to correct this issue. Methods like aids and community involvement have been a measure to try and stop this. All in all this is harmful to women and even men and something must be done to stop this and raise awareness.
Male
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the penis. The procedure is fairly common for newborn boys in certain parts of the world, including the United States. Circumcision after the newborn period is possible, but it’s a more complex procedure.Circumcision is a religious or cultural ritual for many Jewish and Islamic families, as well as certain aboriginal tribes in Africa and Australia. Circumcision can also be a matter of family tradition, personal hygiene or preventive health care. Sometimes there’s a medical need for circumcision, such as when the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back (retracted) over the glans. In other cases, particularly in parts of Africa, circumcision is recommended for older boys or men to reduce the risk of certain sexually transmitted infections.
“The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. However, the AAP doesn’t recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns. The AAP leaves the circumcision decision up to parents — and supports the use of anesthetics for infants who have the procedure” the benefits of the procedure range from easier hygiene , decrease risk urinary tract, prevention of penile problems and more. In america it is more prevalent in america for circumcisions because of things like porn and the self image of the body. Due to cultural factors like this and it is widely accepted that Americans are more prone to these circumcisions.African males are being encouraged to get circumcisions because it is culturally accepted in most of their tribes to Many perform rituals and rites of passage if you perform these. Within these cultures that love circumcision it is harmful because most don’t get the proper care after they are cut many don’t see actual doctors they just perform this on their own. This can lead to various infections.
Circumcision today is widely practiced in many countries like the U.S it has huge benefits and widely acceptable. There are benefits to both for men and women but there are also risks that come with this as well. People need to be educated about the long term effects of circumcision and not just the short term. We all need to take a step back and observe what’s really going on after all this is our bodies are our temples.
