The assignment linked above is a chapbook of poems I wrote for Major Brown’s Genre Studies: Poetry course I took during the fall of my third class year. The assignment highlights my ability to use the learning outcome of crafting creative works (6). Additionally, there is a “writer’s statement” section after the poems, which I believe also shows my ability to reflect on my learning/writing (7). The writer’s statement and a few of the poems allowed me to show how cultural influences effect the production of texts, as I wrote about the watermen culture of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This course allowed me one of the very few opportunities to write creatively as an English Major, and I thoroughly enjoyed stepping away from the more logical and analytical side of the major. Here I could write with no restrictions; I found a strong voice and discovered I was better at writing poetry than I had originally thought.
