Below is my final capstone project. This all-encompassing project required use of almost all of the learning expectations for English majors. Due to the many scholarly sources and creating a Literature Review and synthesis matrix, this project shows my ability to conduct and document research (5). It also required me to use rhetorical strategies in an academic setting (1), think analytically by learning a new and complex theory, (3) and argue effectively by making a case on the use of deceptive marketing in Juul’s advertisements (4). I also spent time understanding how the cultural context influenced the interpretation of the texts, as I studied the target audiences for whom Juul geared their texts towards. Of course, this project also required plenty of evaluating and using sources to make an argument. This is by far the most work I have put into any assignment in my life. A major take-away from this project for me was how extensive the research portion for an undertaking like this can be. 80% of my work for this project came from research, and I think doing this made me much better at problem solving and applying what I’ve learned. The capstone experience will be incredibly valuable to me as I begin my career as an underwriter for a cyber liability firm. In this role I’ll have to research and analyze businesses to determine risk, as well as write with precise attention to detail.
