1.) Salutatio- The salutatio was a component of a letter that contained the greeting. This is important because it shows how Roman rhetoric became fixated on letters and sermons and moved away from oratory with the Greeks.
2.) Scholasticism- was a type of authoritative education. It utilized an argument over a body of premises which were derived from Aristotle. This shows how rhetoric made a turn towards the dialectic during the enlightenment.
Short Answer:
How did the shift in rhetoric from letter writing and sermon effect rhetoric’s breadth?
Prior to the Renaissance, rhetoric enjoyed a wide scope of use. It was taught by sophists for courts of law, practiced in through free speech in open forums, and written in essays. During the Renaissance however, rhetoric became limited due to it’s shrinking in breadth on religious grounds.
Corruption in the church was a reason for the shrinking of rhetoric’s power. Religious leaders did not want people to be able to easily speak out and understand the corruption in the Christian churches. The masses were now highly uneducated and even illiterate, so rhetoric’s power was handed off to priests who would deliver persuasive sermons to keep the masses essentially brainwashed.
With the lack of oratory rhetoric, free speech diminished. The eloquence of letter writing meant the rhetoric was no longer practiced by common people in the open forum. This limited rhetoric to only being used by a few powerful people.
