Pg. 227 “Things began to whirl through my brain just as the cloudy column was now whirling in the room, and through it all came the spiritual words ‘a pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night’.”

Key words: spiritual words, ‘a pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night.”

This is an obvious reference to Exodus 13.21-22, which describes how God guided the Israelite’s, but what makes this even weirder is that Mina knows that Dracula can become and can move in mist form. Also this is comparing Dracula to God again, “a pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night” which has been a reoccurring theme in this book. What still baffles me is how Mina could not connect the strange formation of mist getting closer to house and eventually making a sort of “column” in her room and not realize that it is Dracula. The next day she writes in her journal saying, “I feel terribly weak and spiritless.” (228) There are multiple references in this reading connecting Dracula with God or even direct religious references. For example on pg, 206 Renfield says, “I tried to kill him for the purpose of strengthening my vital powers by the assimilation with my own body of his life through the medium of his blood” which then leads to Seward saying, “relying, of course upon the Scriptural phrase ‘For the blood is the life.” According to Catholic traditions, through Jesus or through God there is new life after we die and that our spirit and faith grows stronger every time we consume the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Again on pg. 236 there is another religious connotation when Renfield compares himself with Enoch, a biblical character who had a long and along with his descendants all supposedly had long lives “Renfield similarly hopes for “more life” from his god Dracula.”
