Semiotics: The Reading of Signs

Semiotics is the study of signs. Today’s class touched on the semiotics as discussed in Lefebvre’s text and how Debord interpreted it for artists.: a way to break free, or rupture the control of a space through actions in space to disrupt and subvert the flow of power.

In the midst of the conversation, an interesting topic came about about a very popular local sign: the confederate flag.

For those interested, I found a website that discusses the various meanings associated with this  one particular sign. Check it out here: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~class/am483_97/projects/sarratt/intro.html

How does this tie into Art in Ukraine? When we get to discussing #euromaidan (and orange revolution, for that matter) later this semester, think about the various symbols that are used. How they’re interpreted in the media, how they’re interpreted by their “carrier”, how they’re interpreted by the crowds. Why use the different signs and does the meaning of the signs change based on (1)who is looking at it (2)how its used (3)how its reported in the media.

During #euromaidan, many flags were flown during the protests.

The Ukrainian flag:

the EU flag:

the Crimean Tatar flag:

Svoboda flag:

Ukrainian Insurgent Army flag:

The collection of these signs creates a rich narrative that is worth further exploration, and something I hope we will get to cover later this semester
