How did #euromaidan start?

Mustafa Nayem is a 33-year-old Afghan-born Ukrainian and one of the country’s most popular bloggers and journalists. A Facebook post he published on November 21, 2013, is credited with kicking off the protests in the Maidan, the central square of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, that led to the ousting of president Viktor Yanukovych three months later.

A couple hundred people first showed up in Kyiv to protest Ukraine pulling out of EU talks last November after Nayem posted a Facebook Message:

“If you really want to do something, don’t just ‘like’ this post. Let’s meet at 10:30 p.m. near the monument of independence in the middle of the Maidan.”
