About Ryan O’Connor

Hello! My name is Ryan O’Connor and as of the 22-23 academic year, I am a second classman at the Virginia Military Institute. As an international studies major, I enjoy analyzing the political climate of the world and understanding how society operates together! I have also declared a minor in philosophy and cannot wait to continue taking courses in what I am truly passionate about intellectually. (!) I am a contracted Marine Corps midshipman with aspirations of becoming a pilot in a few years time and after my due service (depending on whether or not I would like to make the Marine Corps a career) I have considered joining the CIA, DIA, or NSA. Post-retirement or whenever I finally settle down, I plan to have a sizable ranch with my own garage to tinker with my (hopefully) large collection of classic cars. (#)
I am a HUGE motorhead and can talk your ear off regarding anything with an engine and at least two wheels. I have always enjoyed the sound of a solidly operating motor and fresh oil on my hands and face. Vintage Porsches are definitely my favorite when it comes to cars. Their history, body lines, reputation, sound, everything about them has made my heart burst at the seams for one since I was six years old. When I’m not working in the garage, you could most likely find me jamming out somewhere listening to classical music (Franz Liszt and Erik Satie are my favorites) or running a trail in nearby mountains taking in nature’s beauty. I have always been one for introspection and alone time, so these activities completely fulfill these needs. ($)
On a daily basis, I am calm and reserved save for those that I am familiar with. I’ve been told that I have a wicked case of RBF (Resting B* Face) and although that might be true, I’ve also been told I have a big heart and I know I would do just about anything for you if only you’d ask! Not a lot of people know that about me but I practically live to make other people happy and comfortable.
Day to day for me at VMI is a total bag grab and I am here for it! The constant change and keep-you-on-your-toes attitude always has me coming back year after year for more! (%)
The image above made me gravitate towards it in regards to leadership because in order to be an inspirational leader and one that can gather followers, you must have passion, which in this photo, is represented by a burning heart. Going deeper into the symbolism of the painting, the heart aflame is being served on a platter, much like a leader would themselves by making themselves accessible to their subordinates and being open to criticism.
