Essay 2

Learning the Language

On my second essay I talked about a short story by Perri Klass called, Learning the Language. I rhetorically analyzed the piece properly using pathos, ethos and logos. The story itself was about how the author journeys through an internship at a hospital, she learns medical phrases and other jargon. I talk about how she uses pathos to show how she learned things she didn’t really want to know about and it bothered her. For example, she learned the term CTD, which means Circling the Drain. I explain in her ethos, or her credibility, that she proves herself through just showing that she learned the words. She properly uses them at the end of the story and proves to the reader that she’s a learned medical student. I also cover how at the certain hospital she was at, the medical staff protected themselves by using certain words and phrases that distance themselves from the patient. Words like boxed, or CTD, prevented the medical team from actually realizing what they were talking about.
