Link: The Professor’s House: Distinctions in Sin
In this paper from the Fall semester of my 2/C year, I analyze the possibility of an allegory for the Seven Deadly Sins in Willa Cather’s novel, The Professor’s House. I seek to show that the protagonist in the novel, the Professor, demonstrates the symptoms of sloth, specifically an archaic idea of sloth known as acedia. I analyze how the Professor draws his own distinctions in sin, especially as to which sins are more enthralling than others. I draw on my skills of analyzing texts as well as on outside research I did on the intricacies of acedia and the effect it has on an individual’s spiritual life or attitude toward life itself. In drawing on these different experiences, I accomplished the learning objective of reflecting on multiple learning experiences in order to synthesize knowledge. By doing this, I gained a better understanding of the novel and I developed important skills in synthesizing knowledge to produce an effective argument.
