Link: Jane Eyre as a Miscarriage of Christianity
This paper, which I submitted as the final paper for the British Literary Traditions class (ERH-205WX), demonstrates my understanding of the ways in which cultural context influences the production and interpretation of texts. Here, I draw on contemporary criticisms of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, specifically how Brontë’s own Christianity and the fractured nature of Christianity at the time of the novel’s writing influenced her portrayal of spirituality in the book. Jane Eyre has a variety of spiritual “discourses” throughout the book, such as strict puritanism, instances of the supernatural, and an almost pagan spirituality. Brontë’s own time period was one of schism and confusion in the Church, and I argue in this paper that this resulted in Brontë forming a kind of spirituality that is actually contrary to the main tenets of Christianity.
