Final Paper: The Presumption Against War and the Unity of the Virtues

Link: The Presumption Against War and the Unity of the Virtues

This paper, which, prior to my Honors Thesis, is the pinnacle of my academic career at VMI, is a philosophical study of a contemporary discussion in just-war theory. This discussion is of whether or not just war deliberations ought to begin with a “presumption against war” or the opposing “presumption against injustice”. I seek to show that the argument itself is flawed due to an improper regard for the nature of the virtues on both sides of the debate. Namely, that the virtues must be regarded as unified in the approach to just war.

As of this posting, I have presented this research at a conference for the Network for Undergraduate Research in Virginia (NURVa), and will be presenting at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at VMI.
